Riverside Farms to Mpulungu

 Sunday Sept 18th

We woke up at 2am ready to go.  I made some breakfast to eat.  We got Sarah and Liz sleeping mats and bags to the trailer.  We piled into the Land Cruiser and were off on our "13 hour trip."    I Sleep, Red and we talked,  We all took the enneagram  personality test.  With 7 of us in the car and out of 8 personality types we have all but a type 5.

Stopped for a bathroom break to and picked up breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The roads were so bad it took much longer to drive than we thought.    During our drive through a national park we saw a river and a bush dog.  We got in late and the Zambian Church Conference President got us a hotel room.  Nice enough, no sink and saw at least one cockroach.  We slept for 4 hours.  Back on the road for an hour and POP!  Our belt broke and radiator burst.  This was 6:00am.  We took the radiator out and Fortune (our driver) hitched a ride back to town to see about a new one.

We ran out of water so Scott, Jabes, and I headed out to a nearby shop to get water.  Nearby was 4 miles round trip.  They did not have water so we purchased some Mango juice.   There were kids following us back and we were surrounding the car.

We got in and drank our mango juice while feeling like we were in a zoo being looked at.  It was not a great feeling.   We did get out and play some football with the kids.  With out water we were getting a little desperate, this was the first time I had really experienced water scarcity.  At 13:00 they returned with water and a welded radiator.  We drank some water and got the radiator in with some difficultly. Praise the lord for the church president, he really carried.

We finally got on our way.  We got to a gas station about 22:00.  17 hours on the road. There was no where else to sleep but in the Land Cruiser. It was hot and I am pretty sure I was touching everyone in the car.  Scott and Jabes Got out and slept on top of the trailer.  At 9:00 we drove 30 minutes to the harbor.  Purchased some food and water, Loaded all of our gear into the boat and took the 1.5 hour boat ride to the village.

We had help taking our stuff to the campsite.  Setup, had dinner, played with the crowds of kids and then got some sleep!
